Born in San Francisco, CA, Harvey Wiley Corbett graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1895 with an engineering degree and continued at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts (Atelier Pascal), graduating in 1900. By 1901 he was associated with Cass Gilbert and in 1903 established Pell & Corbett (with F. Livingston Pell), with offices in New York City. This would, however, be only the first of many associations which Corbett would undertake. By 1912 he was in partnership with Frank J. Helmle and by 1935 in the firm of Corbett & MacMurray, which evolved into Harvey Wiley Corbett Associates by 1941.
In the latter years of his career Corbett was closely involved with role of the skyscraper and its design in the United States. He was also associated with Columbia University, first through the atelier which he headed there and later as a lecturer and critic. He further served on the Advisory Board for the School of Architecture, Princeton University.
