Born in Baltimore, MD, Thomas G. Machen graduated from both Johns Hopkins University (A.B., 1906) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (B.S. Architecture, 1909). While at MIT he was part of the atelier led by Despradelle. Thereafter he traveled to Paris, where he matriculated at the Ecole des Beaux Arts and with the Atelier Laloux. He remained in France for approximately three years. When he returned to the United States, he found employment as a draftsman with firms in New York City and Baltimore. He later was associated with such offices as Owens & Machen and Machen & Dixon. In 1933 he organized an independent office in Baltimore, and it appears from the Baltimore AIA membership records that he retired by 1965.
Machen joined the AIA in 1928 and was given emeritus status in 1966.
