Born in Pulaski, TN, Calvin L. McKissack joined his brother Moses McKissack in 1922 to establish McKissack & McKissack. Calvin McKissack had attended Fisk University from 1905 to 1909, but earned a Certificate in Architecture from the International Correspondence Schools in Scranton, PA. He then practiced architecture in Dallas, TX, for three years (1912-1915), moved to Nashville, TN, in 1915, and taught architectural drawing at Tennessee Agricultural and Industrial State Normal School for three years. He followed that with a directorship for the Industrial Arts Department of Pearl High School and then became the first executive secretary of the Tennessee State Association of Teachers in Colored Schools.
Throughout these educational pursuits, however, he never let his architectural skills as a designer lag; he was credentialed as a registered architect in 1922 in Tennessee and would expand his range of registration to Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, Florida, and Mississippi.
