Prominent developers, Herman Wendell and Walter Bassett Smith were instrumental in the development of the neighborhoods of Overbrook Farms, Pelham, and Wayne, PA. Their communities often harnessed the skills of young architects who had not yet achieved the prominence which they would enjoy later in their careers. Marketing to urban dwellers who wished to enjoy the pleasures of the suburbs pushed their developments to success, especially since Wendell & Smith offered such modern conveniences as clean water, central steam heat plants, electric lighting, and easy access to transportation to carry homeowners back to the city.
