Louis H. Goettelmann was born in Philadelphia and graduated from Northeast High School. He studied architecture at Columbia University between 1927 and 1928, and at the Beaux Arts Institute of Design. He would later attend graduate courses in city planning at the University of Pennsylvania (1944), but did not complete a degree. He began practicing independently in 1928, but also worked as a draftsman with Dreher & Churchman that same year, and with Boyd, Abel & Gugert in 1929. During World War II, he was conscripted to work at the New York Shipyard in Camden, NJ as a naval architect. He joined the national AIA in 1947 and continued an independent practice for the rest of his career. During the early 1950s, he was associated with friend and fellow Haddonfield resident Herbert R. Leicht on several projects. Leicht may have secured a job for Goettelmann's son, Louis H. Goettelmann 2d, with the firm of Trautwein & Howard, with whom Leicht was associated from the late 1940s into the early 1950s.
Goettelmann was an early member and president (1945-1947) of the West Jersey Society of Architects, and wrote a history of that organization in the 1960s. He was also a member of the New Jersey Society of Architects, serving as a director in 1945-7. Goettelmann was very active in historic preservation, co-founding the Haddonfield Preservation Society in 1966, and contributed substantially to the successful effort to create a local historic district in that town. Goettelmann was engaged in a number of other local civic organizations, including the Haddonfield Historical Society, where he was a director in 1954-1957. He was a member of the Haddonfield Zoning Board of Adjustment from 1961 to 1974, of the Haddonfield Civic Association (1945 on), and of the Historic Sites Review Committee State of New Jersey (1969 on).
