Born: 5/31/1867, Died: 12/3/1939 Although Alfred H. Granger had a successful career outside of Philadelphia, he was part of a thriving firm in Philadelphia during the years 1910 to 1915. Granger was born in Zanesville, OH, and received his B.A. from Kenyon College in 1887. He attended one term as a special student at M.I.T. and then went abroad, studying for two years at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris and in the Atelier Pascal. Upon his return to the United States he was employed by several firms, including Shepley, Rutan & Coolidge, in their Chicago office, and by Jenney & Mundie, also Chicago. In 1893 he established his own firm in Cleveland, OH; and in 1895 he was joined by Frank Meade to form Granger & Meade, also in Cleveland. By 1898 he had moved back to Chicago, where he was a partner in the firm of Frost & Granger; and he came to Philadelphia in 1910 when the firm of Hewitt, Granger & Paist was established with offices at 671 Bullitt Building.The activities of this firm were interrupted by World War I, in which Granger took an active part, serving as a chairman of the committee on emergency construction of the War Industries Board and as commanding officer in the Regiment of Engineers. After the war he returned to Chicago, this time initiating a partnership with John C. Bollenbacher under the name Granger & Bollenbacher. This partnership continued in operation until Granger's retirement in 1936. Granger was a member of the Philadelphia Chapter of the AlA, the Illinois Society of Architects, the Chicago Chapter of the AlA, and the national AlA.
