James L. Divvens was born in Uniontown, PA. He received his architectural education at the Carnegie Institute of Technology, earning a B.Arch. in 1935 and an M.Arch. the following year, winning a fellowship for his graduate work. He returned to his home town in 1936 and entered the office of Harry W. Altman as a draftsman, remaining there until 1940. Between 1943 and 1946 he was a civilian flight instructor for the U.S. Navy at the University of Pennsylvania.
Divvens entered the office of Barney & Banwell as a draftsman in 1945 and was promoted to project architect in 1950. In 1956, he was made a partner in the firm, which became Barney, Banwell, Armentrout & Divvens. Following the retirement of senior partner W. Pope Barney in 1967, the firm became Banwell, Armentrout & Divvens. Divvens joined the national AIA in 1959.
