Allen Cornell was born in Philadelphia, the son of builder John Whiting Cornell, Sr. and Ida (nee Dyer). Allen Cornell attended Germantown Academy before a B. S. Arch. in 1916 at the University of Pennsylvania. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War I, and joined the family firm of J. S. Cornell & Son, Inc., builders, along with his brother John W., Jr. Allen was president of the firm by 1934, and later served as the chairman of its board. Cornell was elected a member of the Carpenters Company of Philadelphia in 1929. He also served as president of the General Building Contractors Association, and of the T-Square Club, and chaired the Huston Foundation.
