Frederick Jacob Wurster was born in Philadelphia, the son of Marie F. and Jacob F. Wurster. He attended the Robert Morris School and then graduated from Central Manual Training School in 1909 and studied architecture at both Drexel Institute and in the T-Square Club Atelier. From 1909 to 1921 he was employed by a number of Philadelphia firms, including that of Carl P. Berger, Sauer & Hahn, Philip H. Johnson, Duhring, Okie & Ziegler, and Frederick Webber. In 1922 he and Harold Webber established the firm of Webber & Wurster, with offices at 1520 Locust Street. This firm continued in operation at least through 1941, and thereafter the two partners appear to have worked in individual practices, according to the Philadelphia telephone directories.
Wurster was a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and of the Philadelphia Building Congress.
In his AIA application Wurster cites the following as examples of his work: Hotel Francis Scott Key, Frederick MD; Apartment House, 1530 Locust St.; Jefferson Building, 1015-1019 Chestnut St.; Lawrence Building, Philadelphia; Roosevelt Hotel, Pittsburgh, PA.
