Born: 6/6/1913, Died: 10/18/1996 Philadelphia native James A. Nolen, Jr. was educated at the University of Notre Dame, where he earned a B.S. in Architecture in 1936. According to his Philadelphia Chapter, AIA, application, he worked for "various building offices" from 1935 to 1939 and then for Armond Carroll, Sr. in 1939 before opening an architectural office in Germantown in that year. Beginning in 1942, he served in a U.S. Navy construction battalion in California during World War II. Nolen joined his father's development firm, Erlen, after the war, and was involved in many aspects of the office's residential and commercial projects, including design, construction management, and financing.Nolen joined the national AIA in 1950. By 1953, Nolen had formed a partnership with Herbert H. Swinburne that endured until 1974. Nolen's wife Elizabeth was the daughter of Philadelphia baseball great Connie Mack.
