Architect, artist, auctioneer, and purveyor of dry goods, according to the Philadelphia city directories, Oscar L. Smith enjoyed a varied career before establishing the Architectural Woodworking Co. in 1901. He had studied at the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art during the school years 1891/92 and 1892/93. By 1893/94 Smith was a draftsman with the furniture firm of Karcher & Rehn. In the Philadelphia city directories for 1896-1897 and 1901 he cites himself as an architect, however; and in 1899 he is listed as an architectural renderer. By the time that the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art's Circular of the Committee on Instruction published its 1905/06 issue, Smith had become a "furniture designer and manufacturer," no doubt a reference to his Architectural Woodworking Co. The final notation for Smith in the Philadelphia city directories appears in 1910 when he is cited as a "woodworker."

Smith joined the T-Square Club in 1896.
