A Julius Anderson appears in the Philadelphia city directories in 1893 as an engineer, but for the next several years his occupation jumps from machinist (1897), to "segars" (1899), to clothing (1904 to 1905), leading to the speculation that this might be the father of Julius J. Anderson. In 1906 Julius Anderson appears as a draftsman, and by 1909 he has added the middle initial J. to his name and is an architect with the firm of Anderson & Haupt, partnering with Max Haupt. Anderson's association with Haupt continues from 1907 through 1913. From 1914 to 1916 he is listed independently as an architect; from 1917 to 1918 he is an architect employed by the Mutual Engineering Company. By 1919/1920 he has established his own enterprise under the name Anderson & Co. with architect Arnold H. Mueller.
Projects associated with Anderson in the Philadelphia Real Estate Record and Builders Guide display an affinity for industrial and commercial structures, which might suggest some engineering expertise; but Anderson is also associated with the construction of several early motion picture theaters in Philadelphia.
