Born: 3/1/1886

Charles H. North was born in Philadelphia to William Franklin and Mamie Jane North. He attended Swarthmore Preparatory School and then the University of Pennsylvania (1910-1913), also gaining architectural training with the T-Square Club atelier (1907-10) and the Philadelphia Museum and School of Industrial Arts (1906-08). By 1908 he was employed by Brockie & Hastings and by 1913 was with Arnold W. Brunner in New York. Remaining there about a year, North returned to Philadelphia, where he joined the office of Paul P. Cret (1914-1916). He appears in the Philadelphia city directories as a draftsman from 1919 to 1921 and as an architect with the firm of Rehfuss & North, with offices on Sansom Street from 1924 to 1930. From 1929 to 1930 he is also listed with the Architects Service Co., construction engineers, at the same address. Since George U. Rehfuss died in 1921, it may be speculated that the two had worked in association but that following Rehfuss's death, North simply added the name to his own formally and established a partnership as his successor firm. However, although the Rehfuss & North designation, as well as the Architects Service Co. note appear for North in 1929 city directories, in the Philadelphia Real Estate Record and Builders Guide independent projects, listing North alone, appear beginning in 1926.

According to Philadelphia Chapter AIA membership information, North returned to the Cret office in 1935/36. A notation at the top of his Philadelphia Chapter application indicates that he transferred to Washington, DC; however, no date is attached to that note.
