Established in 1906 by two men from the office of T. P. Chandler, this firm represents one of the best examples of the successful early twentieth-century architectural firm devoted to residential design in Philadelphia. New partners Walter Mellor and Arthur I. Meigs set up their first office in the Lafayette Building in Philadelphia. Almost immediately successful, Mellor & Meigs became well-known for their designs of clubs and private residences. Their early work included the more modest homes developed by the Lower Merion Realty Co., as well as large-scale undertakings such as the Princeton Charter Club, Princeton, NJ (1913) and alterations to the Pickering Hunt Club in Phoenixville, PA (1911). Familial and social associations played a large role in the clientele of Mellor & Meigs. From the Mellor connections came several houses for Phi Gamma Delta, Mellor's fraternal affiliation, and academic buildings for Haverford College, his alma mater. Directly related to the Meigs family are several residences, along with commissions performed for the Browning family.

In 1916 Mellor & Meigs were joined by Ecole-trained George Howe, late of Furness, Evans & Co. However, World War I almost immediately pulled Howe away, and his influence cannot be said to be felt in Mellor, Meigs & Howe before 1919. When Howe resigned from the firm in 1928, the remaining partners returned to the name Mellor & Meigs and returned to their comfortable residential practice.

After the death of Walter Mellor in 1940, Arthur I. Meigs continued the work of the firm, associating with Edward F. Hoffman.
