John Whiting Cornell, Jr., was born in Philadelphia, the son of John W. Cornell, Sr. and Ida (nee Dyer). He graduated from Germantown Academy, and went on to earn an undergraduate degree at the University of Pennsylvania following service in World War I. Along with his brother Allen, Cornell joined the family business of J. S. Cornell & Son, becoming a partner. He was elected to The Carpenters Company of Philadelphia in 1929. Cornell was the first lay president of the Philadelphia Presbytery and served on its pension board as well as on the board of the Presbyterian Foundation. Cornell was also a member of the board of trustees of Beaver College (Arcadia University) from 1947 to 1978.
