J. Robert Buffler was born in Philadelphia, the son of Joseph P. Buffler, and attended Germantown High School before studying architecture at the University of Pennsylvania. Buffler went on to complete a B. Arch. in 1925 and an M. Arch. in 1927. While still an undergraduate, Buffler was a part-time instructor in freehand drawing. He continued to teach at Penn through 1930. After completing his education, Buffler worked in the office of Harry Sternfeld and then with Thomas, Martin & Kirkpatrick. He was also associated with the important incubator of modern architecture in Philadelphia, the Architectural Research Group.
In 1936, he became an instructor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and in 1941 accepted a position at the University of Texas at Austin. He chaired the architecture department there in the late 1940s.
Buffler was a member of the AIA and an active member of the Central Texas Chapter, serving as secretary and president.
