Born: c. 1841

Born in Cumberland, MD, John Waters became one of the most prominent builder/contractors in Baltimore in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Although he was born to a farming family, that family moved from Cumberland to Baltimore County when Waters was approximately three years old. He served his apprenticeship in Baltimore City with William Ortwein from about 1857 to 1861. In 1861 he launched his own business and subsequently prospered, counting among his commissions the Maryland Penitentiary, St. Marys Female Orphan Asylum, and Farmers and Planters Bank.
