Born in Randallstown, MD, to Seymour and Wilhemina (Klohr) Ruff, John K. Ruff was a student at the Baltimore Polytechnic School from 1906 to 1910. In 1910 he entered the masonry contracting business with his father, under the name Seymour Ruff & Son. This relationship lasted from 1910 to 1929, and in 1929 he became president of the enterprise. In 1937, presumably after the death of his father, he established the John K. Ruff Company, contractors and builders in Baltimore, MD.
Ruff was also president of Randallstown Bank and chair of the board of managers of the Randallstown Community Building.
