George Archer was born near Churchville, MD, to Thomas Archer, a farmer and teacher. In 1867 Archer matriculated at the College of New Jersey, now known as Princeton University. He graduated in 1870 and subsequently earned his masters degree in 1873. Returning to Baltimore, Archer gained a position with George A. Frederick and remained there for some two years before launching his own office in Baltimore. Later he would partner with Raymond Allen, who continued the practice after Archer's death in 1920.
Archer's early work focussed on Harford County, the county of his birth, but he would later gain an important commission in Johns Hopkins Hospital, a connection which he maintained throughout his career, designing such buildings as the School of Medicine.
He joined the AIA in 1875.
