MARC Description:
No visual evidence has yet been found to link this drawing to a specific Walter project. However, this drawing is identified in Laverty as the Joseph T. Bailey House, south side of Chestnut St., between Juniper & Broad Sts., Philadelphia, Pa. Ennis research files at the Athenaeum for this house, identify Joseph T. Bailey, later of Bailey, Banks & Biddle, asa jeweler 136 Chestnut St., with a residence in 1847 at 441 Chestnut, but by 1849-50 opposite the mint, at Chestnut & Juniper. The Bailey residence is well documented in Walter's diary entries dated Nov. 17, 1847 to Apr. 13, 1849. Walter's notes that the house is of Italianate design, with a reference Mar. 31, 1848, for example, to a piazza door design. The May 23 entry reads "Made working drawings for J.T. Bailey's house, front elevation for stonecutter, window cornice (full size), front steps, modelions of cornice, main cornice, section of window panel, window sills and brackets, ornamental belts." This description of the facade could correspond to that shown in the drawing in hand. Earlier entries appear to use the term house, and late entries talk about the Bailey Building. It could perhaps be that Walter was working on both his office building & his new house from 1847-49. Another suggestion has been made that this is Lewis's Row, Walter's 1849 Italianate brownstones at 15th & Pine Sts., Philadelphia. These are illustrated in Historic Rittenhouse (1985), p.48. However, visually the drawing cataloged here is also similar, at the foundation & in the number of steps, to the later Walnut St. rowhouses. This drawing cataloged here is published in Drawing toward buildings (1986), p.92-94, which suggests that Walter was copying John Notman's Italianate palazzo design for the Athenaeum of Philadelphia for this townhouse.
