MARC Description:
Title from drawing ROB138*032, which is the first drawing of the construction set, and has the architect's seal. Most drawings have the title "House for W. Beaumont Whitney, Chestnut Hill, Pa." The street address is provided from later drawings, for the alteration & addition project. Commission number 138 and 138A. This set has 64 sheets and reflects several projects: [1] design drawings for the original construction of the house, from approximately 1945 to 1949, indicated by alphabetic sheet numbers [2] construction drawings for this time period, indicated by sheet number 1 thru 12. [3] Later alteration and addition drawings, date around 1953 or 1958, some with job no. 138A, which show plans for a garden house and new laundry. This set also includes a number of unidentified sketches and a subcontractor drawings. Subcontractor drawing no. 1 from Manuel A. Greenberg, structural stee, 4209 Ludlow St., Phila., Pa., shows Robbins received and approval stamp & signature dated Mar. 21, 1949. Braun Brothers are given as the contractors on this sheet. Heating subcontractor's are identified in two cases. In drawing ROB138*055, from the alteration & addition project, Robbins cites J.W. Powel, Peirce-Phelps Engineering Dep't., 2000 N. 59th St., Phila., Pa. as being the originator of the design he has modified for local requirements. Drawing ROB138*045/046, from the original project, is the subcontractor's own drawing, no. B-1180, identified on the sheet as by R. McKelvey, Peirce-Phelps, Inc., Fifth & Noble Streets, Philadelpha, Pa., Engineering Department.
