Holding Information

Collection: Thomas Ustick Walter Collection
Institution: Athenaeum of Philadelphia
MARC Description:
Title & date from WTU*002*002, which is a full sized detail of decorative detail. Drawing WTU*002*001, is unidentified & shows an altar or pulpit. This drawings has been attributed to this church, but is does not correspond to WTU*002*002, nor does it appear to correspond with contemporary descriptions of the pulpit found in the Athenaeum file for this building. Also, it does not visually match the photo of the pulpit shown in Wallace & Dunn (1931) Colonial churches and meeting houses ..., p. 86. Walter's diary entries, which date in 1831 & 1832, and later in 1842 document alterations for the church door, and the building of vaults, with the 1842 alterations unspecified. His "Alteration of church door on Third St." appears to have been significant, providing access to the building no longer available after the 1830-31 alteration of the interior of the building by his instructor, architect William Strickland. Drawings for this 1831 project are not available at the Athenaeum. Webster (1976) cites this church as St. Paul's (Protestant Episcopal) Church (also known as Old St. Paul's) located at 225 S. Third St. originally built in 1760-61 by John Palmer bricklayer/architect & Robert Smith, builder.
