MARC Description:
Previously unidentified, this item is identified as a proposal drawing for the Mariner's Church, Norfolk, Va. in The Making of Virginia architecture (1992), Survey item no. 36, p. 268. Walter's drawing supplies the date of 1843. His only diary entry for this church, date Jan. 13, 1843, however, read "Mariners Ch., Norfolk, Front elevation, 6 col. Ionic ..." but also "a Gothic front, letter of direction, Jan. 13, 1843." The fron elevation in this Walter 1843 drawing is Gothic, but no Ionic columns are apparent. The image does not correspond to other known churches of this time period, and may be the Mariner's Church cited in Walter's diary, or an alternative design for one of the other structures of this period.
