Collection: William L. & Walter F. Price Collection
Institution: Athenaeum of Philadelphia
MARC Description:
Shown is probably the side elevation, with modest entrance, of a 2+ story house, with cellar, in a rural setting. It has English Tudor influences, with some half-timber type windows, and double chimneys with concave openings. Other windows show diamond panes. There elements at the gable & on the front(?) porch. The building material may be stone or stucco, with a stone support for the porch & stone abutting the house to the left of the entrance. The carriage drive is visible from this view. From this view the house appears to be modest, but not plain. George Thomas in William L. Price, builder of men and of buildings (U. of Pa., Dissertation, 1975), p.266-267 documents several possible houses in 1897 & 1898. While most of his houses of this type were on the Main Line, Pennsylvania, he also had clients of this period in Baltimore, Md. (Joseph Stein House) and Wenonah, N.J.(E.K. Farr Residence) Price houses in 1897 included Harry Walker house at Wallingford, John C. Winston REsidence on Wayne Ave. in Germantown, William B. Gest house in Merion, H. Hessenbruch house & gardener's cottage in Merion, Allan Reed residence in Devon, E.L. Bok residence at Merion, and the Jesse Nalle residence at Bryn Mawr. The Reed house is eliminated from visual evidence in the Athenaeum's files.
